Stocks held for more than one year that have grown in value are an excellent way to give. You receive a charitable deduction for the donation and avoid federal capital gains tax.
When making a gift of appreciated securities (stock, bond and mutual fund shares), your gift will be credited at the current market value and you may take a tax deduction for this amount. If you have held the stock for more than one year, you may also avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciation.
In order to properly credit you and your generosity, Save The Bay requires you to notify your broker, our broker and Save The Bay that a gift has been transferred. Due to privacy laws, many gifts of securities are transferred without a clear link to the name of the original donor. Without knowing who the donor is, Save The Bay cannot properly credit your gift nor provide you with a gift receipt for tax purposes.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Notify Save The Bay of your charitable gift intentions. Call Maureen Fogarty at 401-272-3540, ext. 109 to let Save The Bay know that a gift of appreciated securities is being transferred to Save The Bay.
2. Notify your broker of your charitable gift intentions. Please instruct your broker to notify Citizens Investment Services who the gift is from (you) and the amount of the gift. Please authorize your broker to give your name to both Citizens and Save The Bay.
3. Have your broker contact Save The Bay’s broker:
