Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium illuminates local lighthouses this month
NEWPORT, R.I. – May 9, 2019 – Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium is celebrating the lighthouses of Narragansett Bay this May. Themed activities—including a lighthouse craft, scavenger hunt, and the story, “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge,” by Hildegarde H. Swift and Lynd Ward—will educate visitors about the functions and purpose of lighthouses.
“Narragansett Bay has long been the home of dozens of lighthouses that guide wayward vessels through the shallows of our rocky Bay,” said Adam Kovarsky, Save The Bay’s Exploration Center Lead Aquarist. “In many ways, the lighthouses along our local shores are as unique as the creatures that live here. We’re looking forward to connecting this month’s visitors to this important part of the Bay’s history.”
After learning about the lighthouses that guide travelers on the water’s surface, visitors can peer below the waves of Narragansett Bay and observe the creatures that live in local waters. More than 40 species of local marine life are housed in the aquarium, including several exciting new visitors, like moon jellyfish and quickly-growing bullfrog and wood frog tadpoles.
The Exploration Center and Aquarium is located in the Easton’s Beach Rotunda at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport, Rhode Island. The aquarium is open 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday until Memorial Day. From Memorial Day-Labor Day, the center is open daily. General admission to the Exploration Center and Aquarium is $8; $7 for seniors and college students with ID; and free for children under 3 and Save The Bay Family members. The aquarium offers free general admission to all military and first responders with current ID, as well as a reduced admission of $7 for their guests. Starting June 15, Save The Bay’s lighthouse tours will give visitors yet another opportunity to explore the many lighthouses of Narragansett Bay. Three tours—the Northern Bay Lighthouse Tour, Southern Bay Lighthouse Tour and Ultimate Lighthouse Tour—range in duration from 3.5-7 hours and offer passengers the chance to view dozens of Narragansett Bay’s most beautiful and historic lighthouses.
