Providence College, 2014 Environmental Achievement Award Winner

2014 Environmental Achievement Award

Providence College

According to the Providence Business News, Providence College is “the only higher education institution in Rhode Island to have adopted a campus-wide, stormwater-management program that also incorporates a Low Impact Development (LID) approach and management practices to fit with the campus’ overall environmental goals.”

Gale Gennaro, Director of Environmental Health & Safety at Providence College, has worked closely with Narragansett Bay Commission to ensure that the college does everything possible to keep snowmelt and rain stormwater on site, thereby reducing the amount of polluted runoff from entering Narragansett Bay. Three bio-retention gardens are in place at PC, with more planned. By incorporating an LID approach to stormwater management and instituting a long range master plan identifying how/where LID strategies can be implemented in new construction projects, Providence College has set itself apart from other colleges in Rhode Island as an environmental advocate.
